How much compromise is too much compromise?

Cara Pike, in her talk last week spoke of the need for compromise on the slow march toward environmental change, which I totally agree with, but thinking more about compromise today after watching the long series of TV ads, I'm wondering how to establish the limits of compromise.  How far is too far in trying to achieve our goals?

This first came up for me in working on my paper when I realized that my original intent for graffiti as advertising on behalf of the env. was totally misguided and unethical. But when we're talking about the huge and devastating problems we're facing, does that matter?  Should we be about getting the message out at all costs or does that work against the very thing we're working toward?  On the other hand, will we be totally bowled over by adopting a  holier than thou stance?  I certainly don't know the answers.  I don't know if using the same pervasive marketing strategies that the big companies use (assuming we could even afford those types of campaigns!) would erode our moral foundations or not.  Should we even be trying to
play the same type of game that they are, or can we figure out a different approach?  As I said, I don't know, but it's important to think about.
