Ok, so as I was sleeping, these articles were sinking in, and here's what struck me about them in my first waking moments. We have basically just looked at 4 articles saying basically the same thing. As we discussed these articles in our study group, the main focus was on the content...because that's how we're geared as students, but as "communication students" I think we've missed a bit part of the picture, although Michelle expressed it perfectly when she said something like, "the message in all these articles is basically all the same, and it's all summed up in the YouTube video, we might as well just have watched that."
As I am waking up, I'm thinking how powerfully true that observation was. After letting those readings sink in overnight, what is the most memorable and positive thing I'm personally left with? It's the positive images showing the doable alternatives to our current systems in the video. Seeing the physical illustrations of how we could do things differently makes them seem attainable and fun. The Madoff thing was depressing...who wants to be equated with him? The long articles with all the stats was long and imposing...you have to have too much stamina, and the shorter article makes great points but isn't really memorable.
It's the images of alternatives that have the power. Having all of these means of sharing this idea are important, especially in terms of needing to explain reasoning and detail and support claims, but it's the short and powerful impact of the positive images that I feel can most effectively share these ideas with the most people for the greatest impact.
