Ok, time to be honest. I'm embarrassed that to this point I had never actually read Silent Spring. It was a book I became aware of in high school, and felt is was something that should be read, but I never did it. Truthfully, I was afraid that it would be frou-frou and depressing.
Could I have been more wrong? Still now, I have only read our assigned chapters (even though I had intended to read the whole thing) but now that I've read that much, I can't wait to read the rest!!
It's so accessibly written with common language and engaging true stories that I can't wait to get back to it. It moves through interesting evidence at such a quick pace that it's narrative qualities just sweep you away. I also really appreciate the matter-of-fact style, that it's thoroughly researched and not just presenting opinion...but not with too many numbers, and that it comes to a positive and hopeful conclusion. It's beautiful. This book truly demonstrates the power of narrative, even in an essentially scientific work. Thank you, Rachel Carlson. Sorry it took me so long!
